School story · Tip #1

Picture a primary school on the edge of Kampala. Every morning, the bell rings and the gate is still busy. Some children walk in slowly. Some arrive long after assembly. The teachers sigh. The head teacher tries warnings and punishments. Little changes.

Then the head teacher makes one small decision. Each morning, she stands at the gate before the bell. She greets every child by name. A warm good morning for the girl in P.3 who always looks at the ground. A smile for the boy who is usually last. A kind word for the two brothers who share one umbrella in the rain.

At first, the children are surprised. Some just nod. But soon they look up and greet her back. They begin to expect her at the gate.

Within a few weeks, something changes. The children who used to come late start arriving early. They want to be there when she calls their name. The gate is calm. Assembly starts on time. Classrooms feel warmer, and teachers see more children ready to learn.

The head teacher did not buy anything or write a new rule. She simply made each child feel noticed, every single day.

The lesson: children come to places where they feel seen.
