School story · Tip #8

Picture a teacher in a busy classroom in Uganda.

One of her students is bright. He answers well in class discussions. He asks good questions. But his written work keeps slipping. His notes are half empty. His test answers do not match the questions on the board.

Some people in the staffroom say he has become lazy. The easy choice would be to punish him.

Instead, the teacher decides to ask first. After class, she sits with him and gently asks what is making the work hard.

He is quiet for a moment. Then he admits that he cannot see the board clearly from his desk. The words look blurry, so he copies what he can guess.

That is the turning point. The problem was never laziness. It was his eyes.

The teacher moves him to the front row that same day. She talks with his parents, and they take him for an eye test. Soon he has a pair of glasses.

Before long, his notes are full again. His answers match the questions. He raises his hand with new confidence. The bright student was there all along. He only needed someone to look closer.

Lesson: when a good student starts falling behind, ask why before you judge.
