School story · Tip #9
Picture a primary school in Uganda on a Monday morning. The students stand in straight lines for assembly. The sun is already warm.
For years, assembly praise has gone to one kind of student: the top scorer. The same few names are called. The rest clap and look at the ground.
Then the head teacher tries something new. She still praises the best marks. But today she also calls up a quiet girl from P5. She is not top of her class. Every evening, she stays behind to help a younger pupil learn to read. Last week, she swept the classroom without being asked.
The whole school claps. The girl smiles shyly and walks back to her line.
That moment changes something.
The next week, more students offer to help. A boy carries books for his teacher. Two friends show a new pupil around the compound. An older student starts a small reading circle under the mango tree at break time. When teachers ask for help, many hands go up.
By the end of term, helping is simply part of how the school works. Students know that kindness matters as much as good marks. The whole school feels warmer, and every child feels they can shine.
Lesson: What you celebrate in your school is what will grow.
