School story · Tip #14
Picture a head teacher at a day school in Uganda. Every morning, before the first bell, she walks the whole compound.
She passes the classrooms, the latrines, the kitchen and the fence. She looks at doors, windows, desks and taps. It takes a short time, and she does it every day.
One morning, she stops in a Primary Five classroom. A desk at the back has a loose leg. A nail is sticking out. Nobody has reported it yet.
This is the turning point. She does not wait. She calls the school handyman, and the desk is fixed before break time. No child is cut. No uniform is torn. No parent has to come to the school with a complaint.
The same walk helps her find other small things early: a dripping tap, a cracked window, a gate that does not close well. Each one is cheap and quick to fix while it is small.
By the end of term, the compound feels safer and calmer. Teachers notice. Students notice. Repairs cost less, because nothing is left to grow into a big problem.
The lesson: walk your school every day, because problems you see early are cheaper and safer to fix.
