School story · Tip #15

Picture a school on the edge of Kampala. Every term, parents make promises. They promise to come for meetings. They promise to check homework. They promise to pick up their children on time. Many keep their word. Some forget. For years, the school only spoke up when a promise was broken.

Then the head teacher tried something new. At every assembly, she thanked the parents who had kept their word. A short thank-you note went home with each child whose parent came to the meeting. Teachers greeted on-time parents at the gate with a smile and a warm word.

At first, it felt small. But children carried the notes home with pride. Parents felt seen. They talked about it at the market and after Sunday service. Other parents wanted to be thanked too.

Term by term, the meetings grew fuller. More homework books came back signed. Fewer children waited alone at the gate after school. The school did not shout louder. It simply said thank you, again and again.

By the end of the year, keeping promises had become the normal thing to do. Parents and teachers trusted each other more, and the children could feel it.

The lesson: when you thank people for what they do right, they do it more often.
