School story · Tip #12

Picture a school on a hill outside Kampala. At the start of term, the head teacher meets her staff. She does not hand out a long list of goals. She writes one goal on the board: by the end of term, every learner in the lower classes will read a short story aloud.

Every teacher can repeat it. The cook can repeat it. Even the gatekeeper knows it.

The first weeks are slow. Some learners stumble over every word. Other plans compete for time: a new club, a trip, a sports day. Then comes the turning point. At a staff meeting, the teachers agree to ask one simple question about every new idea: does this help our children read? If not, it waits.

Things change. Reading starts every morning. Older learners read with younger ones under the mango tree. Teachers share what works in the staff room.

On the last day of term, the whole school gathers for assembly. One by one, small voices read their stories aloud. Some are shy. All of them finish. Parents clap. The teachers smile, because they set out to do one thing, and they did it.

One clear target beats ten vague ones.
